In how far is art resisting and against what? The seminar deals with art works from the 20th and 21t centuries that respond to and/or protest against specific political conditions. The seminar takes current cases as its starting point. Not least, the debate over censorship is once again a hot topic in Germany. Two discussion events focused specifically on these issues form part of the seminar. From there, the seminar explores a broader range of topics surrounding the issues of freedom of expression, art, censorship, and resistance. It addresses both specific cases and more fundamental questions. The art works that are discussed in this part of the seminar originate primarily from the field of anti-colonial resistance or decolonial practices. At the same time, the question will be raised as to how the connection between art and politics can be conceived in the first place and on which plane we can talk about that art is resisting, let alone the claim of "change". The seminar will be accompanied by a number of theoretical texts (including Rancière and Adorno) that explore precisely this connection and ask at which level one can talk about art's genuine resistance.

Students learn about key positions on the connection between art and politics. They learn to explore and analyze art works by asking what art can achieve in a given historical context and how it does so, given that its specific methods and modes of expression and articulation do not merge with politics.
