Insights from Social and Cognitive Psychology: Understanding Mechanisms: Underlying Thoughts and Actions related to Sustainability
keine

In this seminar we will read, get to know and deepen our knowledge of classical papers supplemented by recent studies in the field of social-cognitive psychology regarding sustainable behaviour. The topics of the individual sessions are deliberately diversified in order to gain insights into as broad a spectrum of different content as possible. Topics may include nudging, science communication, and the attitude-behavior-gap.

Students will be expected to thoroughly read a research article for each session in a way that allows them to critically discuss it. They will also need to give a presentation about a paper they read. In addition, students are expected to participate regularly and actively contribute to discussions.
In order to pass the course, students need to
• hold a group presentation about a paper
• collect data in a field experiment
• write an essay in the form of a scientific paper about the field experiment
The group presentation will account for 25% of your final grade. The group essay will account for 75% of your final grade. The submission of experiment data is required for you to pass the course.

One goal of this course is to expand students' theoretical knowledge in the topic domain and to sensitize them to social cognition relevant in sustainability research and sustainable behaviour. A second goal is to advance students' ability to critically read research papers and their confidence in gaining an understanding of unknown methods and constructs, with increasing self-reliance.
