In this seminar, we explore different forms of art organizations and examine their approaches to engaging with the public and creating publics. We begin by developing a conceptual understanding of what “the public” and “publicness” can mean in contemporary cultural contexts. Building on this foundation, we critically investigate the roles art organizations assume in the process of making publics and ask whether—and in what ways—they function as public institutions.
The seminar introduces key theoretical perspectives and considers their implications through selected case studies of art organizations, enabling participants to connect conceptual frameworks with concrete institutional practices.
