People's willingness to engage in sustainable behavior is significantly shaped by the social groups they belong to and the social identities tied to those groups. The module covers different social and community psychological theories and empirical findings on inter- and intragroup processes relevant to the sustainable transformation of societies. Based on this knowledge, students will develop an intervention concept aimed at transforming the social identity associated with a specific group or community (e.g., a school, a county) into a sustainable one.

Students will acquire knowledge necessary to analyze sustainable transformation processes from a social psychological meso-level perspective. They will broaden their perspectives on psychological determinants of sustainable development from the predominant focus on intra- and interpersonal factors to a focus on group-level processes within and between local communities as well as social categories. Students will acquire skills to apply different methodological approaches (e.g., action research, experiments) in the field of sustainability science. They will develop skills to translate general psychological theories to the specific challenges of sustainable development on the level of social communities and groups.
