This lecture provides a hands-on introduction to quantitative and statistical methods commonly used in social work research. It is organized around the ideal-typical process of empirical research encompassing study planning, data collection, data analysis, and data reporting. Students will develop a deeper understanding of key topics including hypothesis formulation, sample selection, questionnaire development, and both survey and experimental research designs. In addition, the lecture introduces statistical methods frequently applied in social work research.

Students are equipped to plan, conduct, and analyze quantitative research projects addressing questions in social work. They can make informed decisions about appropriate sampling strategies, select suitable research designs to investigate a research question or test a hypothesis, and are prepared to develop basic questionnaires on specific topics. They gain an overview of common descriptive and inferential statistical analyses and are able to choose the one most appropriate for a specific research question or hypothesis test.
