Sustainable M&E: Sustainable Consumer Behaviour in Retailing (S)
keine

Understanding consumer behavior, from selecting, purchasing, and using to disposing of goods or services, is essential for effectively managing retailers' marketing strategies. In the context of sustainability, these behaviors become even more complex as socio-political pressures, ethical considerations, and environmental concerns shape consumer decision-making. ‘Sustainable Consumer Behavior in Retailing’ examines how retailers can encourage more sustainable consumption choices, for instance through store design, nudging or social influences. Additionally, the course fosters a discussion on trends such as circular economy approaches, consumption reduction, shifts in dietary patterns etc. and retailers’ role in the transition. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical examples, students will develop an understanding of the mechanisms that shape consumer behavior in retail and how these can be leveraged to drive more sustainable consumption. The course begins by building an understanding of consumer decision-making processes, with a particular focus on retail environments. This is followed by an overview of how retailers can either support or hinder sustainable consumption choices. Finally, students will gain an in-depth understanding of how retailers across various sectors apply theoretical knowledge to foster sustainable behavioral change.

• Understanding consumers' decision-making processes, particularly in the context of sustainable consumption in retail settings
• Understanding how retailers can influence or hinder sustainable choices (e.g., through choice architecture and social influences)
• Applying theoretical knowledge to understand, analyze, and critically reflect on retailers' strategies for fostering sustainable behavioral change

In the seminar, a maximum of two sessions *may* be held online or in a hybrid format after consultation with the students. One of these sessions is designed as feedback and/or consultation meetings to support students with their oral presentation and written assignment.
The focus of these meetings is on providing individual (or group-specific) feedback on project ideas, work progress, and presentation concepts. For such consultation and feedback formats, a fully online or hybrid setting is particularly suitable, as it allows for flexible scheduling and short, focused discussions with individuals / groups. The second session involves an international guest speaker. Depending on coordination possibilities and technical feasibility, this session will therefore take place either in a hybrid format or fully online.
