CONTENT
The module introduces students to applied psychology in the areas of work-/organizational-/economic-, health-/clinical-, and educational psychology. It addresses key societal challenges (e.g., digitalization, demographic change, integration, sustainability) via case studies, discussion of research, interventions, and/or exercises.

Topic
This seminar covers a range of topics related to the intersection of psychology and health in different areas of life, including the workplace. The seminar entails analysis and discussion of recent studies in the field of health psychology and their implications for applied psychology. Discussions of cases and practical applications as well as with guest speakers and practitioners in the field complete the course.
This is a hands-on seminar and students will make choices on the specific topics covered by choosing empirical papers and preparing a presentation. Possible topics include:
• Health behaviors (e.g., exercise, nutrition, smoking) and their psychological determinants
• Factors influencing adherence to medical recommendations
• Coping with chronic illness and disability
• Age- or sex- or gender-related health issues and interventions
• Cultural or socioeconomic factors influencing health outcomes
• The placebo effect and its implications (e.g., for homeopathy)
• Mobile apps, wearables, and digital tools for health monitoring and behavior change
• Environmental psychology and its impact on health
• Presenteeism
• Workplace safety

The students will acquire competences of reading, understanding, critically evaluating, and applying empirical evidence on applied health psychology and learn to transfer their knowledge and skills to realistic societal challenges. Students acquire critical future skills (see https://www.future-skills.net) of judgement, dialogue and conflict, and change, amongst others.

There will be an extra session that will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
