The seminar introduces fundamental questions and concepts relating to the topic of justice and combines these with a systematic introduction to academic reading and writing, covering topics such as reading strategies, literature review, academic research questions, text structures and argumentation.
The course focuses on the concept of justice from philosophical, social and political perspectives – particularly in the context of processes of social transformation. Among other things, the following key questions will be addressed: What notions of justice come into play when we discuss the direction in which we should develop as a society? How do different understandings of justice differ, and what conflicts arising from these differences lead to transformation? What role do inter- and intragenerational justice play?

Key topics include:
• Concepts of justice particularly relevant to sustainability transformations: inter- and intragenerational justice, geographical justice, procedural justice and interspecies justice
• Concepts of justice as distributive principles when dealing with scarcity: equality, justice based on need, entitlement-based justice and equity
• Justice as a contested field between universal norms and power-shaped social realities, which can only be understood through the interplay of theory and practice
• Justice as the outcome of concrete social negotiation processes, which must constantly be redefined within the tension between normativity, power and political practice

Methods:
The module combines text-based reading and analysis with guided writing and discussion tasks. In the process, key concepts are explored, critically discussed and reflected upon in writing.
Students will receive a course schedule and all relevant materials in good time at the start of the semester.
