This course critically examines the real costs and limits of artificial intelligence through a sustainability lens. Students will build a foundational understanding of how AI systems work, by differentiating the types of AI and respective purposes, and what resources (e.g., energy, water, minerals, etc) they need to operate. The course then interrogates corporate claims about AI as a sustainability solution, developing students' ability to distinguish evidence from hype. The social dimensions of AI adoption are explored, with particular attention to labor, inequality, education, and the risks of rushing AI into learning environments. The course closes by examining governance responses and debating whether genuinely sustainable AI is possible at all
By the end of this course, students will be able to critically evaluate the environmental, social, and educational impacts of artificial intelligence, distinguishing evidence from hype and applying that judgment to real world cases and policy debates.
