This seminar explores the relationship between migration and class, drawing on various Marxist schools of thought. We will examine how migration is structured by capitalist class relations and how it in turn figures into class composition and struggle. Topics include: debates on class formation and the role of labour mobility; the evolving relationship between nation, citizenship, and the working class; the concept of class composition and its relation to migration and labour regimes; segmentation and super-exploitation; and the question of solidarity and struggle. These themes will be approached through both theoretical texts and historical as well as contemporary documents of migrant labour struggles, with a particular focus on Germany and the EU.
By the end of the seminar, students will be familiar with a class-centred perspective on migration and will have gained an insight into various Marxist debates and concepts that can illuminate how migration is situated within class relations. They will also develop an understanding of the ways in which class relations in Germany and the EU have been shaped by migration and by struggles around it.
