This is the English-language seminar accompanying the lecture series, however aiming at English-speaking students and with attention given to the situatedness of the main literature in a German context. Both course offerings concern the same topics and follow roughly the same texts, but each seminar-session will combine several texts.
The seminar introduces historical cultural studies as an enterprise that is characterized to a particular degree by the reflection of its respective historical present. Their topics, questions, and specific approaches often go back to very different contemporary experiences of crisis, which have made seemingly fixed certainties precarious.
The seminar assembles - not least against the background of again highly topical experiences of crisis - a series of those historical contemporary diagnoses in order to
(1) to discuss cultural studies topics and methods in their diversity and to understand them in their socio-economic, political and cultural context
(2) to thematize the interrelation of cultural-scientific modes of problematization and experiences of crisis, and thereby
(3) to identify continuities as well as ruptures with regard to current questions and problems in cultural studies.
