Inhaltliches
In this seminar, students will be equipped with skills to design and conduct interviews and to reflect critically on the research process. With an in-depth focus on “qualitative interviews”, students will understand different perspectives, values, and experiences when conducting interviews. Working on small academic projects, students will design interview questions, define their target groups, approach participants, and conduct interviews. Along the way, we will critically reflect on key questions: What makes a good interview? How does the interaction shape the data? And how do our own assumptions influence what we learn?
This course combines hands-on practice and interactive approach that integrates methodological input and structured reflections which include key steps in the process:
• formulating clear and open-ended interview questions
• developing interview guidelines aligned with research questions
• selecting and approaching suitable interview partners
• conducting interviews with sensitivity and flexibility
• listening actively and responding to interview dynamics
• reflecting on their own role, assumptions, and potential biases
• understanding the relationship between research questions, methods and data
• communicating and presenting insights in a structured and reflective way
• applying ethical principles in conducting interviews (e.g. informed consent, confidentiality)
Assessment is based on a reflective presentation of students’ interview experiences and learning process (5 mins p.p. + 15 mins discussion and questions p/group).
