Content
This course provides an overview of the statistical methods that are required for quantitative analyses in economics and political science. It introduces the essential tools that permit estimating causal effects (rather than mere correlations) from observational data.
Contents:
1. Review of linear regression
2. Decomposition methods for linear regression
3. Instrumental variables regression
4. Linear regression with panel data
5. Differences-in-differences estimation
6. Regression for categorical outcomes
The covered methods not only allow students to rigorously test hypotheses derived from theory but to assess whether the relationships found matter quantitatively. In the class sessions in the second half of the term, students will learn how to apply the methods to specific research questions using real-world data sets and Stata. This course will enable students not only to assess and scrutinise papers that use the methods, but also to use the methods on their own in later term papers and their thesis.
