Management Theory and Practice

Much of our professional and private life today is shaped by management and organizations. Management matters to all of us. We have to manage ourselves, manage others in student working groups, and after graduation, manage within firms. This course will take you on a trip through some main roads, a few backstreets, and several exciting places to explore management thinking and practice. Mary Parker Follett once stated: “Management is the art of getting things done through people.” We do so by infusing organizations with a purpose, developing strategies to anticipate the future, organizing people’s work, making organizational decisions, managing digital technology, shaping daily routine operations, and, among other things, facilitating innovation. Throughout these topics, you will learn to combine state-of-the-art scientific knowledge with practical applications and reflections.

The objective of this module is to give students a thorough introduction to the topic of Management. This course aims to provide a basic understanding of the following topics:

1. Managers and Management
2. Managing Purpose
3. Managing Strategy
4. Managing Structures
5. Managing Decision-Making
6. Managing Digital Technology
7. Managing Routine Operations
8. Managing Expertise
9. Managing Innovation

The 10 CP-module is subdivided into two parts: foundation and seminar. First, the foundation part consists of ten lectures. The first part will be completed with a 60 minutes in-class written test (plus reading time) covering this course's primary reading material and lectures. Second, the seminar part is designed to extend, reflect, and apply previously learned knowledge within different contexts. The module participants will be subdivided into about 9 seminar groups; each seminar group will investigate a major management topic in-depth, mainly within a specific industry context. Students will work in teams and jointly formulate, craft, and present research papers.

10 CP-Examination
This is a combined exam: you will receive points for the written test and the seminar, adding up to a final grade. Therefore, both exam parts need to be taken in the same semester— 10 Credit Points in total.

Please note the FSA amendment IBAE and the expiry regulations for the Major BWL and B.A. WiPäd:

Major BWL and B.A. WiPäd:
Management (5 CP) will be offered for the last time in the 2024/25 winter semester for Major BWL and B.A.WiPäd. The lecture must be attended and the examination for Management (5 CP) is a written exam. Management Theory and Practice (10 CP) is not part of the WiPäd and Major BWL curricula.

Major IBAE (start of studies in winter semester 24/25):
IBAE students who began their studies in the winter semester 24/25 should enrol in Management Theory and Practice (10 CP).

Major IBAE (start of studies BEFORE winter semester 24/25):
With the latest change to the IBAE major, Management (5 CP) and Management & Entrepreneurship Research (5 CP) have been removed and replaced by Management Theory and Practice (10 CP).
Management (Ma-IBAE-6, 5 CP) and Management & Entrepreneurship Research (Ma-IBAE-12, 5 CP) will be offered for the last time in the 2025/26 winter semester. If you have not taken both modules by the end of the 2025/26 winter semester, you can take Management Theory and Practice (Ma-IBAE-22, 10 CP) as a substitute.
