How to speed up transformation? Regenerative Dynamics in Social-Ecological Systems
none

Regeneration is a new and upcoming research field in sustainability science that aims to shift the focus from ‘sustaining’ the status-quo to fostering positive self-reinforcing and self-maintaining system dynamics – so called ‘regenerative’ dynamics. In this course students will learn to identify regenerative system dynamics and characteristics based on a real-world case study example. In groups students will analyse qualitative interview data to map social-ecological system dynamics and identify regenerative dynamics and system characteristics.

The course aims to equip students with theoretical knowledge and methodological tools to understand and analyze regenerative dynamics in social-ecological systems. More specifically, after the course students should be able to

- apply a social-ecological systems perspective,
- explain the concept of regeneration and key frameworks related to the regeneration of social-ecological systems
- explain how landscape restoration is linked to different domains and scales of social-ecological systems,.

Students further acquire methodological skills including
- qualitative content analysis of interview data,
- analysing causal relationships between system components and,
- analysing regenerative system dynamics and system characteristics.

In addition, students gain social competencies through the work in interdisciplinary teams and by practicing their presentation skills.

See Syllabus (materials) for further information on class and assessments.
