This module provides an introduction to the fundamentals of sustainability management and creates a basic understanding of corporate sustainability. This introductory course deals with functions, analytical approaches and methods of sustainability management. Approaches to normative and strategic aspects of socio-economically rational sustainability management are addressed and an overview is given to advanced methods and areas for an in-depth study of corporate sustainability. Different actor perspectives are analysed with reference to stakeholder theory and applied to understand and shape approaches of corporate sustainability management. This includes market-oriented, standards-oriented, cooperative and political perspectives of corporate sustainability and sustainability topics of different organisational departments.
This module aims to provide a broad overview about corporate sustainability management and to raise awareness about both the relevance of social and environmental issues for companies and their success as well as the relevance of companies as actors for sustainable development. The students should be able to understand the relevance and approaches of sustainability management from the perspective of different stakeholders and corporate managers. Apart from learning fundamental notions and challenges the participants are encouraged to actively reflect concepts and methods of stakeholder and sustainability management.
From the second week onwards, this lecture partially applies an inverted classroom approach in the first part of the course. In contrast to conventional lecture formats "inverting the classroom" means that you must study new material outside of class - texts, videos, assignments offered through the Moodle online course. In some weeks, class time is therefore used for problem-solving, discussions, debates, case studies and other forms of hands-on practical work.
There is an opportunity to attend the online lecture "Brückenmodul" on 22 October at 16 h, which will be in German language. This lecture will provide a short introduction into the thematic area of sustainability management. Please see "Brückenmodul: Einführung in das Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement (für Studierende außerhalb der Umwelt- und Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften)". This is explicitly a voluntary offer.
