Content
In this course, students examine tensions and paradoxes that need to be managed in the course of digitalization. At the highest level, the course content is divided into different blocks. On the one hand, students acquire broad knowledge of digital transformation, innovation, strategy, platforms, and infrastructure, as well as the types and management of tensions and paradoxes. On the other hand, students will work intensively in groups of 3 people to address specific tensions/paradoxes in the context of digitalization and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice (analysis of a scientific publication and and qualitative interviews). The results are then presented and summarized in a podcast format.
Examplary topics include:
- Meaning, differences, and triggers of digital “X” phenomena
- Introduction and presentation of various concepts: digital transformation, digital innovation, digital innovation units, digital entrepreneurship, digital infrastructures, digital platforms
- Introduction to the necessity of dealing with paradoxes in times of digitalization
- Distinction from key terms such as paradox, dilemma, and trade-off
- Factors that highlight paradoxes and tensions
- Introduction to different types of paradoxes
- Influential research trends that deal with navigating paradoxes (e.g., ambidexterity, duality, paradox)
- Levels and types of navigating paradoxes
- Introduction to tools for navigating paradoxes
- Presentation of some paradoxes in the digital age
Goal:
Knowledge
- Have initial knowledge about reasons for emergence of paradoxes in times of digitalization
- Have advanced knowledge of approaches to navigating paradoxes
- Have advanced knowledge of certain paradoxes and approaches in specific digital “X” phenomena
Skills
- Can analyze types and approaches of paradoxes of different digital “X” phenomena
- Can assess suitability of different navigation approaches in distinct digital “X” phenomena
- Can analyze paradox types and approaches of an empirical case in the context of digitalization
- Learn how to use digital media for knowledge transfer (e.g., podcasts)
- Learn to develop and execute a podcast
General Competences
- Can engage with academic literature, critically reflect and present scientific findings and arguments
- Can apply theoretical knowledge to analyze and make sense of empirical cases in digital “X” phenomena
- Can differentiate distinct types of and approaches to tension-laden situations
- Can adequately contact potential interview partners
