The course focuses on the challenge of creating individual, organizational or societal change for addressing sustainability concerns. It discusses different drivers of and barriers to change, ranging from cognition and emotions over market and policy incentives to values, institutions and social movements. It hereby combines a focus on important areas of sustainability transformation such as climate change, labor standards and inequality with an entrepreneurial and organization-theoretical perspective on change dynamics.

Professional competence:
The students
• gain a deeper theoretical and empirical knowledge about current challenges in sustainability transitions
• understand different drivers of and barriers to change on and across different levels of analysis
• are able to participate in ongoing discussions regarding sustainability transitions based on theoretical and applied insights
• are able to independently identify and delineate a relevant research question around a key sustainability challenge and know how to review the pertinent academic literatures regarding the self-chosen research question
• understand the relevance of current research results for understanding (lack of) social change and improve their skills in reading academic articles and interpreting and applying research results to practical problems and solutions
• Students are able to develop a coherent argument to shed new light on and provide answers to the research question
• Students demonstrate good academic writing skills (clear and accurate writing style in English language, correct use of relevant terminology, coherent structure of arguments, proper use of references) as well as presentation and debating skills

Personal competence:
The students
• consider the broader societal and practical implications of their study
• learn how to reason beyond current developments—envisioning and critically exploring possible futures of sustainable production and consumption, also as a basis for assessing their own entrepreneurial ventures and career choices
• practice acquiring knowledge from a variety of sources, ranging from most advanced scholarly literature to specifically applied practitioner debates and own research, and learn how to critically reflect and creatively recombine this knowledge to responsibly form and advocate their own opinion.
• reflect on how to evaluate their own work and provide feedback to others in a constructive and critical manner
