Content
The seminar explores counter-hegemonic archival practices in the field of art. The so-called "archival turn" elevated the archive – "simultaneously a repository and generator of historical knowledge" (Messner) – to a central subject of various artistic and curatorial practices. Central to this was the focus on the democratizing and emancipatory effects of engaging with the archive as "the law of what can be said" (Foucault). Many archives serve to consolidate institutional power, while others resist and subvert institutional logics of organizing and mediating knowledge. It is these archives that we will focus on through a selection of examples. The seminar is a collaboration with the M.A. Critical Publishing program at the Academy of Art and Design Basel. Together with students from Basel, seminar participants will organize an international public workshop.
introduction to critical archival practices, archival and art-theoretical approaches to the archive, as well as to artistic and curatorial practices that are critically engaged with the archive.
