How can organizations create meaningful social impact while staying financially sustainable?

This seminar dives into the fascinating world of social enterprises and hybrid organizations - businesses that blend profit and purpose to tackle urgent social and environmental challenges.

Through real-world cases like HEYHO, a muesli company that provides jobs for individuals with lived experiences (such as incarceration, homelessness, mental health disabilities and more), we will explore how organizations successfully combine market logic with mission-driven goals. Students will gain insights into the unique opportunities and challenges of social enterprises and hybrid organizations.

In this interactive course, we will not only study inspiring examples but also design innovative micro-trainings to apply these lessons in practice, thus equipping yourself with tools to foster positive change in future organizations.

If you’re interested in sustainability and new ways of doing business, this seminar will challenge and inspire you.

This seminar teaches participants about hybrid organizations, social enterprises, and Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs). Participants will learn to comprehend and utilize these concepts effectively.

Students should be able to:
- Understanding and applying the concepts of hybrid organizations, social enterprises and WISE
- Analyzing inspiring case studies to learn from successful hybrid organizations and to extract key lessons and best practices from these exemplary organizations
- Developing creative and interactive trainings to inspire and enable individuals to apply these key lessons and best practices

This seminar combines a cooperative learning approach with a challenge-based learning approach. It aims at the joint development of knowledge in class that is transferable to practice. Therefore, this seminar will foster an engaging and supportive learning community.

This course will be held in presence on campus. Moreover, the course will be conducted in English. However, as students will be analyzing case studies, German language skills may be necessary. In case of insufficient German skills, students may approach the lecturer and discuss this concern.

This course can be completed as part of the Leuphana Sustainable Entrepreneurship Certificate (LSEC). Participation in the certificate is NOT a requirement to enrol in this course. The course is open to all students. For more information and registration for LSEC, check the following link:
