“Resistance! Theory and Practice” introduces students to different conceptualisations of unarmed forms of resistance, and challenges them to analyse a contemporary case study of their choice.
The opening phase of the seminar will explore ‘resistance’ in theory offering insights from the interdisciplinary field of Resistance Studies, which combines insights from social movement studies, political science, peace studies and gender studies. This broad foundation prepares students to discuss ‘resistance’ to many forms of domination in the second part of the seminar.
The second phase focuses on the practice of resistance and asks students to select a contemporary resistance example and to present the case-study in the seminar. This example can be drawn from any field (political, environmental, class, gender, cultural etc.). The presentation will identify and analyse aims and methods, and review and discuss outcomes and consequences of the practice. The open choice of cases ensures a seminar that is responsive to students’ interests.
Assessment will be done via Combined Scientific Work with the participants preparing and presenting a case study of their choosing (70%), and acting as a critical discussant for a peer (30%).
Students will benefit from a team-taught seminar combining the political background and knowledge of Dr. Ina Friesen, and educational and pedagogical insights from Dr. Andrew Brogan in both the design and the contents of the seminar.
Participants will be familiar with a range of conceptual tools for the analysis of acts of resistance.
Participants will articulate the theoretical and conceptual foundations of resistance and apply these to specific cases.
Participants will critically explore the relationship between critiques, theories of resistance, and alternative social models.
Participants will reflect on the relationship between theory and practice.
Participants will engage in academic and professional communication.
