Qualitative Research Methods - Exploring Alternative Organisations

This course offers students a basic introduction to qualitative research methods. In this tutorial, students come together at Leuphana and discuss the online lecture's content in more detail. The students will conduct their qualitative research projects, and we will have time to answer questions and look at published studies as examples of how to conduct qualitative research.
A primary goal of this tutorial is advancing students' research projects, which will make up 70% of the final grade. The research projects are group based projects of about three students. The students will conduct their qualitative study and present interim results within this tutorial (30% of final grade).
Thematically, this course centres around the phenomena of alternative forms of organisation. Research on alternative organisations has flourished over the last five decades (Parker et al. 20214; Vijay et al. 2025). Debates span widely across what sets alternative organisations apart from more mainstream organisations, what they may constitute an alternative to, how people in alternative organisations imagine and enact alternative futures, the challenges they face in organising from within a contested system, as well as the contingent processes through which they reproduce their alternativity (Alakavuklar 2024; Dahlman et al. 2022; Schiller-Merkens 2024; Shanahan 2024; Vijay et al. 2025). In this course, students will be exposed to a selection of these debates while exploring alternative organisations of their choice, with the aim to shape their analytical view on the practices, processes, conflicts, and interrelations of alternative organisations with wider social, economic, and ecological systems.

After completion of the course, students shall be able to:
• know about the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and be able to identify when to use a qualitative approach
• know about a research design and the different approaches of conducting qualitative research
• analyse qualitative data with the help of computer software
• reflect on quality criteria of qualitative research

This module is comprised of a lecture and a tutorial. The lecture will be held online and the tutorial offline at the Leuphana. Regarding the lectures, there will be 14 podcasts à roughly 15min. The podcasts are produced as 'audio slides', i.e., videos that display informative slides alongside the respective speakers' explanations. Watching these lecture units and going through the complementary set of reading materials or assignments are mandatory for participating successfully in the tutorials. Students work on these lectures individually from home. The tutorials will take place bi-weekly at Leuphana. During the tutorials, we will reflect on the content and answer students' questions regarding the material. We will also apply the content to own research projects.
