This course explores the intersection of generative AI, art, and culture, critically examining how AI works and the issues related to generated cultural products. We will examine how generative AI tools rewrite the logic of imagination and how this is changing the current cultural and artistic landscape. Through examples of AI-generated art, exhibitions featuring generative AI, and the broader transformation of visual culture by new technologies and platforms, students will also train their critical thinking and imagination, deliberately stepping away from screens, to build new ways of thinking about and approaching digital culture.

Students practice core methodological concepts hands-on: identifying bias in AI systems, critically analyzing AI-generated cultural products through specific examples of art, visual culture, and exhibitions, and producing their own outputs through coding.

This is a survey course in which students will gain a general understanding of generative art and its impact on exhibitions and broader visual culture. Students will develop critical thinking by understanding how algorithms work and behave. They will learn to code, assisted by AI, to interact with algorithms and produce their own analyses. Additionally, students will learn how to engage with scholarly publications and academic literature, and how to begin writing academic texts.
