Inhaltliches
Gasthörerprogramm
Basics of organic chemistry (substance groups, functional groups, physicochemical properties such as reactivity, solubility, boiling point etc.) will be discussed using examples of important chemical substances and everyday products considering their chemistry and use (e.g. fuel, natural gas, solvents, pesticides, synthetic materials, flame retardants, medical drugs, scents, sugars, amino acids, dyes). The lecture will cover the basics for understanding the occurrence and behavior of organic chemicals in the environment. Additionally, the importance of the chemical industry (including sustainable development) and resource relevant topics referring to organic chemistry and to aspects of sustainable chemistry will be covered.
The lecture will demonstrate the importance of (organic) chemistry for the economy, society, and sustainability. Therefore, basic knowledge of organic chemistry and the environmental behavior of organic chemical substances is necessary. In particular, this includes the following topics:
• The connection between the structure and properties of organic chemical substances (“Structure and function”)
• Examples of reaction mechanisms
• Functional groups,
• Importance of chemical products as well as aspects of organic resources (selected organic natural substances, fossil fuels)
• Understanding of environmental topics in reference to „organic chemistry”
• Important groups of organic pollutants and their properties
• Properties of organic substances and their importance for retention and behavior in the environment,
• Typical processes of environmental chemistry
• Aspects of sustainable chemistry
Students who want to “immerse” themselves in chemistry can – after consultation – take part in lectures and seminars from the chemistry teacher training (e.g. Organic chemistry, biochemistry).
