The seminar provides a comprehensive introduction to Global Political Economy (GPE). GPE examines the interplay of power and wealth at the global level, as well as across global, regional, and domestic arenas. The field is problem-oriented, theoretically diverse, and methodologically pluralistic. Scholars in GPE draw on a wide range of epistemological and ontological assumptions to analyze how the world economy – including global systems of trade, finance, and production – shapes politics, and how politics in turn shapes the economy. They address, for instance, the power relations underlying global trade and production patterns, the determinants of foreign direct investment, the impact of globalization and financial crises on political behavior, and the consequences of offshore banking for inequality and state sovereignty. The aim of the seminar is threefold: to familiarize students with the core theoretical debates in GPE; to provide a deeper understanding of how shifting power configurations have historically shaped the world economy; and to equip them with analytical tools to make sense of contemporary issues. To this end, the seminar is divided into three parts. The first introduces the field of GPE, its intellectual diversity, and central themes. The second applies GPE’s theoretical and methodological approaches to the historical development of the world economy from the 14th to the 21st century. The third examines wealth inequality as a defining feature of contemporary political-economic developments, with particular attention to its connection to assetization and the implications for our understanding of “modern” capitalism.
